Mather selected by Tzar Ivan as his bride, is loved by Lykov, whom she loves, and Gryasnoy, who tries to win her with a love potion. Gryaznoy's mistress substitutes poison, and marther goes mad on learningas she lies dying in the Kremlin that Tzar has had Lykov beheaded for crime. Gryaznoy kills his mistress.
