
A ballet in four acts music by Tchaikovsky, based on Russian folk tales as well as an ancient German legend, which tells the story of Odette, a princess turned into a swan by an evil sorcerer's curse. It was premiered on February 27, 1877, at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow as "The Lake of the Swans". The Russian ballet patriarch Fyodor Lopukhov has called "Swan Lake" a "National Ballet" due to its originated from Russian lyrically romantic sources.
