Lustige Witwe, Die

(The Merry Widow), operetta in 3 acts by Lehar; libretto by Viktor Leon and Leo Stein after Meilhac's comedy "L'Attache"; premiered in Vienna on December 30, 1905. Lehar's most successful work. The gay, complicated plot deals with the attempts of baron Mirko Zeta to obtain the Merry Widow Hanna Glawari's fortune... by getting his young compatriot Danilo to marry her.
