Ivan Susanin was a Russian folk hero and the martyr of the early 17th century's Time of Troubles. Glinka wrote one of the first Russian operas of international renown, Ivan Susanin(A Life for the Tzar). The opera saw several name changes until Russian Revolution, when it reverted back to "Ivan Susanin"
