Golden Cockerel, The


(Coq D'or, Le), Opera in 3 acts by Rimsky-Korsakov; libretto by Byelsky, after Pushkin's poem;premiered in Moscow on October 7, 1909.The opera tells of the miraculous golden cockerel, given to the old King Dodon by the Astrologer, which crows at the sign of immenent danger. Dodon brings back the beautiful Queen of Shemakham to his capital; when the Astrologer demand payment for the cockerel he is killed by Dodon, and the cockerel kills the King.
